If you could model the CAM parts in Maya/ZBrush, etc. to the exact scale you could use the 3D printer to make extras, but the acrylic for 3D printers is incredibly expensive.

yeah i figured it would be ... there's always some drawback.  it's like a laser printer is great until you have to buy toner.  well, any printer, really...

i just like to dream about how magical it would be to just be able to PRINT dolls.

They do it with stopmotion puppets a lot. They'll model characters in 3D, print them, and then use the prints to make molds for the puppets' bodies and heads and stuff.
