Have you noticed that Mattel seems to have thrown away most ethnic dolls that were part of the Barbie line away? I mean we have no true ethnic dolls of any kind in the playline aside from Steven and Nikki. Raquelle is "supposed" to be part Asian but other than dark hair, she has no Asian features. Even worse I think is that her twin Ryan is completely white looking. I don't care if they are fraternal twins and those types of twins do not look identical but Ryan SHOULD have Asian features. And why did Mattel do away with the TRUE Asian dolls like Kira/Marina and Lea? They had such beautiful faces. Teresa is said to be Spanish or Italian but even THIS seems to have been recanted. Christie was a big part of the Barbie line until Mattel discontinued her in 2004. And the tan version of Kayla was actually nice looking. I mean her face looked great and I liked the Fashion Photo Shoot version of her the best. The only Asian and ethnic dolls always seem to be collector issues now with the exception of the 2012 I Can Be President dolls. I just feel this is probably why the Bratz dolls were so popular. They had so many ethnic dolls and while some were only in one line, some made multiple appearances. I mean Skelita and Jinafire are two of MH's truly confirmed ethnic characters and they aren't even represented enough. What do you guys think?

Barbie has definitely just failed at diversity to be very honest. Every line had a distinct tan Teresa a gorgeous Kira a random brunette or red head character a lovely dark skinned black haired Christie and then your all American barbie it was awesome everyone got what they wanted. These days Teresa and barbie are basically the same skin tone with Nikki being the same shade Teresa used to be its very sad and disheartening. They have the S.I.S line but that's a complete fail if you ask me. The dolls at first rocked but they are really lacking these days. Barbie is all about Barbie and I'm over it

Yeah it's sad. I mean, with Raquelle and Ryan I read them as being mixed race, maybe some asian, some hispanic all thrown in there. Because Ryan's doll seems more olive skinned than say, whitey white white Ken (lol).

Still, it'd be nice if there was more diversity yeah. I miss Christie (Nikki/artsy's face mould is hideous imo, that grin is just so.... evil soul sucking argh), not only did she have a beautiful face she usually came in a rich chocolate tone that was far more clearly "black" than the ambiguous deep tan of modern Nikki. I actually have a suntan beach Barbie who's the exact same skin tone as the supposedly AA girl... what?

I mean, I get that AA comes in loads of tones (look at SIS) but it kinda feels a bit whitewashy not having a properly deep skinned beauty in the bunch.

Also, speaking of... where the hell is Steven? He only ever gets lame beach dolls and he's been retgonned out of existance in LITDH. Seriously? Come on Mattel, bring him back and give him some articulation! And some hair!

Same with Allan, I want redheaded Allan back. He inexplicably became brunette during the 90s (did Mattel think they couldn't sell a couple where both the guy and girl were ginger?) but i've always loved his bright firey hair, it's cute. It'd be awesome to have a redheaded boy in the bunch.

Kira or Lea or any of those pale girls would be nice to have back as well.

I mean look at the current cast. We have Barbie, the blonde white chick. Summer.. the blonde white chick... uh... (also where's her brother gotten to?), Nikki the ambiguously probably black but could be any tanned girl with the scary face mould (hate that face mould soooo much omg), Raquelle the kinda pink white brunette one (anyone notice how pink her skin is? lol) and Midge, the ginger white chick.

So... that's a lot of white chicks huh?

I also miss the facemould diversity of Fashion Fever (now there was a great line). Mattel have so many face moulds at their disposal, it's sad they only seem to use them for the collector lines nowadays. Barbie has many much more attractive moulds than her current somewhat bland one, and some variation would be nice in the sea of identical dolls.

Of course, I did what most collectors did. I bought fashion fever dolls for the faces and outfits, then shoved them onto modern fashionita bodies who had bland faces and lame outfits hahaha. Voila, perfect doll.

Sadly the diversity there is lacking too though as fashionistas only had 2 skin tones. Tanned and "more tanned". Raquelle gave us a kinda pale one as well and SIS provided some nice christie toned ones but SIS isn't easily available outside the US. (I always wanted that little brother, he's stinking adorable!)

I hope that next year we get a lot of competition for Mattel. I think they need it, they've been sitting as just about the only doll company in the aisles for a while now. Since Bratz pulled out and Spin Master decided not to continue their doll lines, we've been left with a bit of a hole where some competition would be very very helpful.

I agree there needs to be more diversity in barbies. I really think nikiki's old face mold was nicer then the one she has now. I would love to see some more face molds too. it would be nice to see barbie herself with different eye colors too when i was little you could get barbie with purple eyes and green eyes i thought it was cool. I wouldn't mind seeing brown eyed barbie's too. It would be nice to see Allen come back and having a few other boys would be good too. Right now we only have 3 boys in the line Ken, Ryan and like one Steven a year.

Nikki is a nice doll but I think her nose looks too big. And I mean REALLY big. That's the only thing that bothers me with her other than the dolls she has outside of the LITDH line wear the same exact clothes as Barbie. At least Christie wore something completely different or a different color when she was being used. Also the Diva face mold was another pretty face that seems to have been retired. The S.I.S. dolls don't interest me much except the ones where you used water to curl the hair. I have that Grace and when it dries, the curls don't stay and the hair feels all sticky like hairspray was heavily applied to it. Also the hair is quite brittle and the silver paint flakes off of the iron so easily. The first time I used the doll, paint chips were left in Grace's hair and I kept wondering where it came from as I knew the chips weren't there when I started. Grace even lost quite a bit of hair in the process and I have at least six holes where the entire hair plug got pulled out. Also with that doll, the one clip (the barrette) won't stay in and I have to say I was pretty disappointed in the doll's features. I still use the hair twister and butterfly clip as they work well and are so much easier to use. I'd like the other two in that line only to complete my collection, not to style the hair.

Alan's name was changed when he was reintroduced in 1991 and the early 2000s because like Barbie and Ken, he was originally named after some one creator Ruth Handler knew. In this case it was her daughter's boyfriend/husband. Allan was originally called Allen but it was changed when he married Midge because by then the real Barbie and Allan were divorced. This is probably why his hair color changed. Plus Ken has had many different hair colors himself. I also think the period when Summer was a strawberry blonde, she was probably supposed to be a Midge replacement or substitute. I mean the Top Teen Model line had her using a hair color similar to a couple of Midge dolls.

yeah Mattels alot into whitewashing across all their lines. The latest Disney princess 7 doll pack- all white girls. Yikes.

and what theyve done to the American Girls line... yeeesh!

also I have a feeling we are never going to see another redheaded boy again thanks to Frozen. :P

With the exception of Kira/Marina, Lea, and Miko, any Asian doll in the playline during the 80s and 90s were usually one time dolls. Dana is another exception but she had two dolls while the other multiple doll girls had at least three.

Another thing that has always bothered me was the rare use of Barbie's friend Becky who used a wheelchair. She only got three dolls and is pretty hard to find as her dolls weren't very common. Why it bothers me is that for once the Barbie line wasn't being criticized for being "unrealistic" or "inappropriately dressed." Becky received many positive feedback and she was a pretty doll. Not everyone can walk and kids know that. So why did Mattel get rid of a well received doll to begin with? I mean I heard Becky had the same body as Barbie and her friends with the only difference being that her legs were fashioned for the wheelchair.

I think with Becky it came down to the expense of the wheelchair. Larger box, more plastic etc. Her price point makes her impossible to budget line.

It'd be cool to see her again though.

Much like I kinda miss the Happy Families sets because they felt a lot more well.. wholesome than some blonde chick who lives with her "sisters" (yeah right) and keep a pet boyfriend.

What I find interesting is that Steffi Love was allowed to have children and get married, but Barbie never has been. It's always "dream" wedding and any baby introduced is always an inexplicable sister not a daughter (As a kid i'm sure I wasn't alone in thinking Kelly was her kid right? I always assumed that till I saw her advertised as baby sister adn then I was all "whaaa?" )

Because clearly a 30 year age gap is more believable and acceptable than just letting the grown woman start a family to go with her 50 billion careers.

I do wish Steven would be reintroduced to the lineup and wasn't just shoved into occassional beach lines. Wth?

Is it me or is Nikki a lot lighter? I could have sworn Christie was darker.

I don't like her face mould either it makes her look 40.

it would be great to bring back some other characters again like Nichelle she was used for the generation girl line but I think they could re vamp her it would be more than awesome to have that Afro again.

I would also like more of Steve not just random beach lines and yes Bringing Allen back would be great we have Midge back so why not.

Yes 1d, Chrissie was a lovely milk chocolate tone while Nikki is actually the exact same skin tone as tanned beach line Barbies from the 90s were. A sorta, deep bronzed colour.

I'd love to see more boys. Allen back, Steven as well preferably with rooted hair (he'd look excellent with an afro or something, we KNOW you can do this Mattel.) heck, bring back Blaine and give us some ex boyfriend drama for Barbie and Ken lol.

I dunno, I remember as a kid being kinda annoyed I only had 1 boy and 20 girls. Made play time rather tedious because you couldn't really play out family or high school or any of that dating kinda stuff preteen girls start to get into. "omg romance!"

I ended up playing with things like Littlest Pets more beause those we could assign whatever gender we wanted to and used them to play out massive soap operas. I can't have been the only kid who acted out soap opera level stories with her friends right?

I mean, with just Ken and an army of blonde blue eyed Barbies, it became 1 dude and his harem of clones... squick.

Of course it didn't help that my Ken only had one leg and was ugly as sin (80s Ken was hideous! sorry, he was)

We ended up stealing Action Men off older brothers and such, to fill out the numbers and also because he was a far more interesting looking doll that crazy grinning Ken and his pink sequinned tuxedo. (wth?)

Then again, my experience with how young girls play with dolls is only based on personal "when I was a kid" experience as I only have sons, so maybe girls don't play the same way I did. I dunno.

Still, more boys, a more varied cast creates for more interesting play. If you can't differentiate all the Barbies, that's not very engaging for play for older kids. You want to have like... a cast, different characters etc which may be another reason why MH is doing so well. LOTS of different characters who look very very different, vs Barbie's years of all of them looking the same.

At least with LITDH we have more of a female cast, though we're still woefully lacking in boys and the female cast is pretty um... white lol. Still, shove some SIS in there and you've got some nice variety.

Now we just need articulation across the board, come ON mattel, non articulated dolls are so 1990. Do any kids who aren't like... 6? want click knees and robot arms?

The Fashionistas line is weird. The second doll from the left looks like a white girl painted black. The 4th doll from the left.....Is that a blinding white black girl with blond hair? Isn't that the "I'm 45!" Nikki head? Forgive me if I'm wrong. I haven't really followed Barbie since I was 15.

The reason for that being they got rid of all the cool ethnic dolls.
